Let’s see how badly US High Schoolers are suffering from anxiety, and depression, which are the most commonly diagnosed mental disorders. 17 Million US Children of age 3-17 are affected as follows 9.4% of children (6.1 million) have received an ADHD diagnosis. 7.4% of children (4.5 million) have a diagnosed behavior problem. 7.1% of children (4.4 million) have diagnosed anxiety. 3.2% of children (1.9 million) have diagnosed depression. Depression and anxiety have increased over time “Diagnosed with either anxiety or depression” among children aged 6–17 years increased from 5.4% in 2003 to 8% in 2007 and to 8.4% in 2011–2012. “Diagnosed with anxiety” increased from 5.5% in 2007 to 6.4% in 2011–2012. “Diagnosed with depression” did not change between 2007 (4.7%) and 2011-2012 (4.9%). 2.8 million adolescents (ages 12 to 17) in the United States had at least one major depressive episode in 2014 Furthermore, about 80 percent of kids with an anxiety disorder and 60 percent with depression are not getting treatment. Parents with Different Attitudes More than one in three children report experiencing headaches but only 13% parents accepted the fact that their children suffer for headaches as they have stress. 44% of children report sleeping difficulties, only 13% of parents think their kids have trouble sleeping. On average, there are 433,648 victims (age 12 or older) of rape and sexual assault each year in the United States. Unfortunately Rape and Sexual Abuse continue in all age levels of US children. Where is the Law and Enforcement? Where is the Protection for Children? Aren’t we responsible to give them a secured environment? Is US a land of sexual predators and a government who cannot protect children? Who are we?
Sexual Abuse of Middle School and High School Children in US One in four girls and one in six boys will be sexually abused before they turn 18. 30% of women were in ages 11 to 17 at the time of their first completed rape . 12.3% of women were age 10 or younger at the time of their first completed rape. 27.8% of men were age 10 or younger at the time of their first completed rape. More than one third of women raped before 18 are also being raped as an adult . 96% of people who sexually abuse children are male, and 76.8% of people who sexually abuse children are adults . 34% of people who sexually abuse a child are family members of the child . It is estimated that 325,000 children per year are currently at risk of becoming victims of commercial child sexual exploitation . The average age at which girls first become victims of prostitution is 12-14 years and boys is 11-13. Only 12% of child sexual abuse is ever reported to the authorities. Females ages 16-19 are 4 times more likely than the general population to be victims of rape, attempted rape, or sexual assault. One in 9 girls and 1 in 53 boys under the age of 18 experience sexual abuse or assault at the hands of an adult. 82% of all victims under 18 are female. Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the US for all ages. Every day, approximately 123 Americans die by suicide. There is one death by suicide in the US every 12 minutes. Depression affects 20-25% of Americans ages 18+ in a given year. Suicide takes the lives of over 44,965 Americans every year. The highest suicide rates in the US are among Whites, American Indians and Alaska Natives. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) WISQARS Leading Causes of Death Reports, in 2017: Suicide was the tenth leading cause of death overall in the United States, claiming the lives of over 47,000 people “Diagnosed with anxiety” increased from 5.5% in 2007 to 6.4% in 2011–2012. Approximately 70% of rape or sexual assault victims experience moderate to severe distress, a larger percentage than for any other violent crime.
